The former Northwest Airlines transition to all DELTA call signs and the conclusion of the nwa.com website was completed yesterday, January 30th.

The ATC radio streams today have clearly changed, especially noticable in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Memphis and Detroit where all flights now radio as DELTA ----.

Understand that the few aircraft still in NW colors will NOT radio    Delta ---- in Northwest colors    as there is now no more Northwest Airlines or certificate.

All web entries on NWA.COM now pop up redirected to the DELTA.COM website and similar subject pages.

Yeah. Still, I feel a little sorry for Northwest. They were just awesome.

If it was me i'd try to incoporate some NW colurs with DL colours to have a new image. But that must cost so much. Its a shame that NW callsign will be lost. Does anyone think that in the future the NW callsign could be used on a new airline?

Guys, as a very frequent visitor/user of the Asia-Pcf page of nwa.com, I can tell u this with absolute certainty: It's infinitely superior to delta.com as far as this region is concerned.

Ever since the merger, I hv tried delta.com about a dozen times but it's so U.S.-centric that it's practically useless for any travel NOT involving U.S. destinations. E.g., if U want to look @ award(Or even buying a ticket) availability for intra-Asia or Asia-EU flights on SkyTeam partners, nothing will show on delta.com except DL's own(Sometimes not even NW coded flights). In contrast, U could see all that and a lot more on nwa.com which was far superior+userfriendly for NW/DL customers based in Asia-Pcf.

My feeling has always been neutral about this merger but in the back of my mind, I always worried about DL wouldn't bring delta.com upto nwa.com standards for Asia-Pcf customers. Well, this finally has now happened and I guess DL doesn't really care about ex-NW Asia-Pcf customers such as myself but only worry about how to get folks living in the U.S. to the world(I admit delta.com is perfectly adequate for U.S.-based customers).

A shame really, for such short-sighted customer strategy and trashing what NW has built-up so brilliantly(I recall nwa.com was once awarded as the best airline website in Asia-Pcf) in this region.

Speedbird, my understanding is that Delta now owns the rights to the ''Northwest'' trademarks (word mark, logos, etc.), so anyone who wants to use these marks will have to negotiate with Delta. If Delta grants the rights, it will come at a very high price.

I agree with everyone who posted that Northwest was superior to Delta. I never got the opportunity to fly them intra-Asia, but they were my airline of choice for U.S. domestic flights. Delta is the typical cattle-car U.S. legacy carrier, and now that NW is gone I'll start cashing in my FlexPerks miles and switching my allegiance to Southwest and Continental for U.S. domestic flights.

I'v got to admit that I was a Delta fan and used them a lot in the 80s and 90s mainly L-1011s from LGW to CVG. I used them as I reported last year for the first time in a long time MAN - ATL and they were very poor. It was always a joy to travel with NW in the days when they had daily flights out of PIK and the service was as good as any on the pond.

Like so many others I did feel NW colours were refreshing and modern but DL colours are like so many others around today.

As for the callsigh if I started an airline only doing domestic flights in the North West of Scotland or England or Ireland and wanted to call it Northwest whatever Airlines/Airways I could adopt the callsign Northwest as there is no other airline using that callsign within my geographical area. There was a North East Airlines in the USA and a Northeast airlines in the UK in the 60/70s and both had the callsigh Northeast as never the twain did meet.

Also lets not forget that they were still flying some old classics around IE DC10 until not so long ago

I have no personal experience of flying Northwest but a relation living in Minneapolis was a frequent flyer with NWA, had no choice, her company paid the bills and called the tune. She used the name NORTH WORST to describe the airline - this in the days of the DC10. Both domestic and international service standards earned the same label from her and she flew executive class.

I've also heard ''Northworst.'' The airline went through a rough patch in the late 1980s-mid 1990s with a costly acquisition of Republic Airlines, labour difficulties and a bankruptcy and the quality of the product probably suffered. However, since that time they had one of the better reputations among major U.S. airlines. I moved to the USA in 2001 and by that time they were among the best respected airlines.

I had also heard  Northworst  frequently among frequent travellers based in Asia-Pcf throughout the 90s. Frankly, it was quite bad back then with a lethal combo of generally outdated/tired products(NW Accountants milking 25yrs old 742s/D10s for all their worth seem to be NW's Corp philosophy for the 90s...)+indifferent customer service attitude(Except intra-Asia routes where crew/staff were consistently good). I used NW during that period only because:
a) I wasn't traveling as often as now and NW had the most generous frequent flyer program on earth, period.
b) Partner KLM was among the best+most reliable intercon players and served the biz destinations I needed to go(Wonderful Schipol also helped and it was a real eye-opener proving connection didn't hv to be painful even after a 13hrs+ flight in Y cabin fm Asia-Pcf).
c) Nostalgia going back to the days of flying on fuel-thirsty, low bypass-noisy NW 741s as a kid.

NW seemed to start to rapidly evolve fm late 90s/early 2000s. 1st, it deployed an industry-leading website which empowered customers to do far more stuff online than any competitors in the most user-friendly ways. Then it became the 1st N.American carrier to offer lie-flat seats in C/J and remained as the only U.S. airlines to do so for @ least 5yrs(Why the bigger boys DL,AA and UA didn't bothered to catch-up with NW earlier still puzzles me today). Finally, they completely retired all stone age 742s+D10s in exchange for a large fleet of 330 that's not only state-of-the-art but has AVOD in every seat(Another 1st for any U.S. airlines). All these done by the mid-2000s. I think that's about when  Northworst  completely disappeared from nearly all intercon frequent flyers' vocab.

I'm not even based in the U.S. but fm 2000-2009, I hv on avg flown NW @ least once a yr and all are private trips(Including quite a few in C/J seat on discount/upgrade) paid out of my own pocket so I called the tune, had choices but chosen NW.

I don't think NW was so awesome! I would fly JNB to BOS via AMS and I always dreaded transferring from KLM's new 747-400's to Northwests old and rattling DC-10s. I always held my breath until we touched down in Boston, fearful that something would fall apart.

The DC10 is a classic. I'd loved to have flown that.

Well I am one of these people who have flown in the DC-10 many times and always felt safe. I was on the second Laker DC-10 to fly after the AA accident at Chicago when as the myth goes the engine just fell off the aircraft. You need to read the report of the accident and there you will see how not only AA but other US airlines were taking the engines off and putting them back on using a fork lift truck rather than the manufacturers approved engine cradle.

At Laker and at BCal and subsiquently BA there were no major problems with DC-10s. They were as good as anything around at the time apart from the L-1011 which had a slight edge. I know all about the cargo door locking problems but Boeing had exactly the same problem with the 747 and they had a few near disasters but thankfully in the 747 incidents only a few lives were lost.

I do agree NW held onto the 10s a bit longer than most other airlines but we need to remember as FLX has pointed out NW were under chapter 11 for many years and could not afford to replace their socks far less aircraft.

NW held on to their McDonnell Douglas birds for decades because McD built their hulls to be worked to death and last for decades. No way a Boeing or Airbus could have survived that many flight hours. NW management must have thanked their lucky stars everyday during the BK years that they managed to buy/inherit McD aircraft during the early years instead of Boeing or Airbus.

I got a chance to fly NW D10-30s towards the end of their life on 2 or 3 LAX-MSP-LAX flights...they were great birds. Comfy to fly in with plenty of storage space.

Odd Socks:
Since U talked about your unpleasant experience(I hv no doubt about that) on AMS-BOS on a NW D10, by definition, that's got to be quite a while ago. I'm guessing U probably hv not tried the <updated> NW intercon since then. If that's the case, this may come as a shock to U:
NW might hv <EXCEEDED> KL in terms of intercon products since around 05 and retained that lead all the way till the NW brand ceased ops a few wks ago.

05 was just about when the last D10 disappeared fm NW's Trans-Atl system. Take the NW/KL joint intercon C/J class product(i.e. World Business Class) as an example, KL flew their 1st flight with a true(Well, more of less...), angled lie-flat seat only about 3-4yrs ago. In contrast, NW has been offering real angled lie-flat seat on DTW-AMS since 03. Similar story/timeline of KL playing catch-up with NW re AVOD in every Y-seat.

This is quite remarkable because as long as I can remember and ever since KL and NW formed the 1st modern airline alliance in the early 90s., NW had always been the <poorer cousin> in that alliance <family> always offering customer products inferior to KL's just like what U described. Back in the 90s when I was flying those tired NW widebodies, I would never imagined a role reversal in which NW would took the lead over KL.
