Well ...This gets me lots of years back.
I ' ve flown a DC 8 , named   Abel Tasman   back in April 1978 from Athens to Amsterdam and a couple times a DC-9 (unfortunately no more data on the planes) between London and AMS .The only thing I remember is that the food was excellent and besides there was provided a smoking section in the back rows of seats.
Whoops ...It's more than 30 years since then and it seems that time has flown fast ....

I flew KLM DC-8/9 as follows:
DC-8 7/Jan/74 KL124 LHR-AMS
DC-8 9/Nov/76 KL119 AMS-LHR
DC-8 30/Jul/82 KL120 LHR-AMS

Such a long while ago.

Yes the DC-8s were used on Med / Long haul routes and the DC-9s on Short to Med routes. We used to get two DC-8s a day at PIK (JFK-PIK-AMS) in the morning and later on (AMS-PIK-JFK) We were sometimes allowed into the aircraft for a look see (such was security or the lack of it in these days) and I do remember the  Dicky 8s  as a luxuary airliner.
I have flown in DC-8-43 of AC and it was also quite something.
When the PIK link stopped we then got Electras and DC-9s for a time before KL moved to GLA.
As far as seating capacity in the KLM 8 I can't remember but some web site must have details. I do know that they had three DC- 8 - 63s that had 233 seats in and they were used on high density charter type flights. These were PH-DEE, DEF & DEH.
DC - 9 - 15 had 80 seats and DC - 9 - 33/33s had 108 seats.
