Given how frequent the subject of winglets appear on this forum, I know many here are effectively in love with winglets. However, which of these 3 common approaches actually yield the most gain in fuel efficiency? I mean, if say an engineer must design the whole wing within a fixed weight limit but with no limit on wingspan, which of these 3 approaches he/she uses @<the far end of the wing> will generally give the best result?

What I know so far(May not be 100% true facts):
1. All are nearly useless and may even incur weight penalty @ other phases of flight outside cruise.
2. Relative to the other 2 approaches, winglets are visually the most distinctive approach and arguably more <photogenic>....probably why they get the lion's share of attention fm aviation enthusiasts.
3. Winglets add efficiency mainly by suppressing/diffusing wingtip turbulence drag @ cruise speed. They don't really add to overall lift.
4. Winglets are relatively easy to adapt to existing wings that were never designed with winglets in mind originally.
5. Winglets hv little impact to the aircraft's original dimension re terminal gate compatibility.
6. Practically an integrated extension of the existing wing structure, Extended Wingtips are subject to stress/loading in similar ways as the rest of the wing. By the same token, they increase lift and add to efficiency(Less power is needed) but do little to diffuse wingtip turbulence drag.
7. Extended Wingtips(Visually the most straightforward) is the most difficult approach. More often than not, they need to be designed <together> with the rest of the wing @ the same time(i.e. Part of the overall wing design) and they're rarely an add-on(If they are, modifications will still be complex). The wingspan/wingtip growth found only in each major redesign of the 737 from the Original(e.g. 737-200) to the Classics(e.g. 737-400) and finally the NGs is a perfect example.
8. Extended Wingtips significantly increase an aircraft's dimensions and can drastically reduce gate compatibility.
9. Raked Wingtips seem to be the compromise approach between Winglets and Extended Wingtips. Basically, they hv some of<the best of both worlds>(Or some of the<worst of both worlds>).

Will appreciate your help on this subject.

Thank you once again for this most detailed presentation on the pros and cons of winglets or not.

I remember when they were test flying the Space Shuttle from the back of an ex AA 747 they experimented with winglets for stability purposes and that was when they found that on certain wing styles the winglet not only gave a degree of stability it also helped the fuel consumption.

So it has a two-fold purpose> stability and economy<
