I have never thought about it but all i can think of is that is a through back to the former glory days when Sabena was the Belgian airline and their two letter code like that of SN Brussels was SN or is my thinking limited.

Captain Bill is right!
When Swissair collapsed it took Sabena down with it - I seem to remember that it had taken a substantial stake in order to help avert an earlier crisis at Sabena. Swissair was effectively acquired by Crossair which became Swiss. Today Swiss uses the old Crossair LX flight code. A variant on this occurred in Belgium where DAT acquired Sabena, was renamed SN Brussels Airlines, and continued to use the old Sabena SN flight code.
The SN has now been dropped from the company name and it is now just Brussels Airlines - still uses the SN flight code though. Thus the airfleets database shows DAT and SN Brussels Airlines as 'unactive'.
Both Swissair and Sabena were fine airlines but whilst the Swiss were so proud of Swissair (the loss of the JFK-GVA MD-11 was viewed as a national disaster) Sabena was disliked intensively by many Belgians. They used the name as an acronym which I can't quite fully remember (and which translated into English in part in reverse order) but here is my best shot - So Bloody Awful and Never Again.
My question is: what does Sabena stand for?
