http://flightglobal.firstlightera.com/EN/Microsites/1/Airbus/28072008EmiratesAirlinebuys60Airbuswide-bodyaircraft.htm

Today, EK flies a lot more Boeing(All 777s) than Airbuse(A mix of 340s, 332s and of course, their 1st 388) pax jets. While EK is still taking deliveries of brand new 77Ws and 772LRs they've ordered a few yrs back(Upto 122units in fleet by 2011), there've been NO NEW ORDERS for Boeing for a quite a while. In contrast, Airbus seems to hv been getting all the businesses fm EK lately. 1st, I thought 58 units of 388 is already pretty phenomenal and will firmly place EK as the biggest superjumbo operator in the world. With the latest firm order annoucement, EK will hv at least 100units of the 350 well before the end of the next decade. Clearly, EK is madly in love with Airbus widebodies now.

Is Boeing losing out big time regarding EK? I just think EK is too important a customer to miss-out at any cost. We all know the big fat juicy profits are in larger widebodies. Even those huge orders for 737NGs from Ryanair, Southwest and other Chinese carriers can't compare in terms of revenue or profitability. No airlines has ever placed orders for widebodies near EK's quantity anywhere in the world....not even mighty SQ and LH. It makes the widebody orders fm the other big boys(e.g. AF,BA,QF,CX) for the next decade look postively tiny.

With the EK deal, I believe Airbus has won a significant & strategic battle against Boeing for the next decade.

I also believe Boeing have lost out big time to Airbus not only with EK but with a number of other carriers also who require wide body types.

We have commented before about the 319/320/321 in comparison to the 737 range as far as landing is concerend how the Airbus types give a softer landing than the Boeings and I know that this is a factor with many carriers when they evaluate the types for purchase as many passengers on 737 do get distressed with the hard landing and the sensation of loosing control of the aircraft as the nose gear hits the deck.

EK are now established as a real dominant force in the airline market haveing their Dubai hub, a place where many people now want to visit and as a transit point to so many other cities around the world. Reports sugest that Dubai airport can be very congested and that the facilities are poor with regard to handeling so many people but with an economy like Dubai things will change.

I also heard somewhere that ryanair were to test out A320 series aircraft witch should be a worry for boeing aswel.

Yes G-NIKO, the article re FR and the A320 was on FlightGlobal.com. Apparently, they're not pleased with B's proposal(Basically, more of the same old 738s @ a price not very attractive to Ryanair) so they're contemplating a switch to A in future orders. O'Leary was explicit in stating that given FR's size today, fleet commonality is no longer a key factor.

captain bill:
I got a taste of the <hard landing>again 3days ago 1st on a 734 and then on a newer 738 flying DPS(Bali)->CGK(Jakarta)->HKG by GA(Garuda). My girlfriend and I were traveling in the biz cabin upfront pretty close to the nose landing gear. On both flights upon touchdown, she thought the huge noise+vibration were either due to the landing gear has broken or the galley behind the cockpit has collapsed. She has flown on a 320 not long ago but I didn't bother to offer a tech explanation for the diff in sensation.....she went right back to the inflight dutyfree catalogue.... Mind you relative to most other 737 landings I had, our pilots did a pretty good job(Frankly, the last thing I expect from GA) minimizing the impact.

re: FR that is M O'L trying to get Boeing to lower the price or make the deal more attractive...... I think it will be a while until we see airbus in that fleet. Getting airbus in the fleet would be a nightmare for them... the costs... new training equipment, new operations costs, new everything to do with a fleet. I'd say they want more Boeing, just at a better price.

When they bought just after 9/11 and the prices were rock bottom they got an amazing deal, but in the current climate these deals are not so abundant.

I heard a stat recently, that because they bought those planes so cheap and because the ones they have sold have a relatively good second hand selling price, FR are basically breaking even on them , so in theory they have nearly free usage of the planes whilst they have been in the FR fleet.

We've probably gone a bit off-topic....plenty of discussions re EU airlines elsewhere on this forum anyway. Let's get back to EK and try to think about stuff beyond UK or Europe.

captain bill:
I hv seen many photos of and read about the current DXB(Dubai). The 3terminals(The newest one due to open in a mth or so) and 2rwys are top-notch, ultra-modern factilities designed to handle upto 60mil pax per yr: http://www.airport-technology.com/projects/dubai/

Friends & colleagues who hv been through DXB never had congestion problems and hv nothing but great comments for this hub. However, U may be right that with this quantity of new EK widebodies adding to the DXB hub fm now till the next decade, congestion is imminent. Hopefully when the new Dubai mega-airport becomes fully operational in 2017, congestion will be a non-issue(10Xs larger than DXB, 6 4,500m rwys, 3mega terminals, all terminal gates 380 compatible): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Maktoum_International_Airport
