Ok ladies and gents. We have had a recent thread about if money were no option what airliners would you have in your fleet. So I'm stealing that Idea and the same applies but for the 60's and 70's my choice is.
HS 748 for short domestic up to 45 mins
Vickers Viscount longer domestic up to 1hr 15
BAC- 1-11 for EU flights up to 2 hours
HP Comet for flights up to 4 hours
VC 10 for long haul flights

To pick 3: B747-100/200 for long haul, DC-8-61 for medium haul and DC-9-30 for short haul.

I'll go for all the classic british airliners so I have a fleet that looks like a combined B.O.A.C. and B.E.A.

Viscount, Vangaurd, Britannia, Comet, Bac 1/11, VC-10 and I will also add the Boeing 707 not a 400 like speedbird 9468 as the Conways use too much fuel so I will stick with the 300B

Short Range(4hrs or below): 727-200
Completely shattered the myth that jets can't serve smaller airports with short rwys. Much more powerful+reliable than BAC 111.

Medium Range(3-6hrs): A300-B4
Literally THE shape of efficiency for the nex 40yrs(And beyond): Twin-engine + Widebody. Earliest ancestor that defined the basic layout/profile of the bulk of today's(And future's) widebodies. Truly visionary.

Medium/Long Range(6-12hrs): DC-10-30 Base or ER
Probably the most efficient thing(Freddie Laker apparently agreed) legally allowed to do scheduled nonstop across the Atlantic before the ETOPS era. Can also cross the Pacific(Barely though) if pushed(Serious payload penalty though).

Extra Long Range(Over 12hrs): 747SP
1st jet ever that can do over 14hrs nonstop without payload penalty, covering nearly all major intercon mkts in the world. Looks ugly as hell though...

I would pick:

Vickers Viscount for short haul flights up to 1hr30mins.
De Havilland Comet 4 for flights between 1hr30mins and 4hrs.
Aerospatiale/BAC Concorde for flights up to 4 hours.
Vickers VC-10 for flights beyond 4 hours.

I'd pick the 741/742 for flights over 7 hours - no airliner of that era can match the early 747s for range and passenger comfort. The early 747s have greater range than the DC-10 and L-1011 variants and I could put a bar/lounge in the upper deck and make a killing on booze sales

The DC-8-61 would be my pick for 2.5-7hr flights. It has a similar capacity to the 757-300 of today: it can generate more revenue than a 707 or DC-8-63 and is less expensive to operate than a VC-10. Not to mention the fact that no one builds aircraft to last like McDonnell-Douglas...there are hundreds of vintage DC-8/9/10s still operating today as freighters or third world passenger carriers. You don't see too many 707s or VC-10s out there anymore.

I'd pick the DC-9-30 for flights less than 2.5 hours for its reliability. Because of the 90-110 pax capacity it can serve regional markets and high-frequency short trips equally well.

I admit I was @ 1st confused about Concorde for upto 4hrs. Then I realized a Concorde flying 4hrs can cover more than double the distance of any other jets......I'm so used to a world of subsonic travel and forgot about how the Concorde used to <warp> the normal relationship between time and distance on a regular basis....

Good choice to hv the VC10 so it can do those long overland routes where a Concorde must mostly fly @ subsonic speed and therefore inefficient.

Thats why I choose the VC10. The prefromance is rather good from a VC10. Bit of a drinker though

For the 60's repeat only for 60's I will go almost Swissair.

Short/medium range : Sud Aviation Caravelle (aircraft used by most of continental european airlines : Air France, Swissair, SAS, SABENA, Iberia, Austrian, TAP, Alitalia)

Long range : Convair 990 the famous  Coronado 

Medium range : Comet 4B instead of Swissair's DC-8-61

Just a quick unscientific survey of the results so far:

Pure European fleet: 2 people
Pure American fleet: 2 people
Mixed fleet(Though Euro majority): 2 people

So among us, Euro types of the 60s-70s were slightly more preferrable than their U.S. contemporaries.

Mabel:
Your choice of DC8-61 struck me how similar it was to today's A346 in terms of concept. Although 40yrs apart, both strategies called for fuselage stretches pretty much to the extreme limit(Anything longer will probably break the damn thing in 2 clean pieces upon rotation @ MTOW...) of their basic platforms to deliver max possible capacity/efficiency in a 4engines set-up. They just somehow look thinner & longer than anything else in their days. To the best of my knowledge, nobody else were more aggressive in <stretching > airliner programs than MD with the DC8 and Airbus with the 340.

NicoGVA:
It's rare to hear enthusiasts mention the Convair 880/990 these days and I'm glad to see it appears here. Commercially, 707 hv probably destroyed it(Along with Convair's civil division) but ever since its 1st flight more than half a century ago, 880/990 remains as the fastest subsonic airliner type ever built(Who doesn't want to cruise @ Mach 0.9+ on a regular basis?). BTW, I've just found out the name <880> derived fm 880ft per second @ cruise.

The DC-8-61/71 (first delivered in 1966) was the longest airliner produced until 1970 (when the 747 made its debut). It is still the longest narrow-body ever produced to this day. At 187 feet it was longer than the DC-10, 767-300, A300 and L-1011-100 widebodies and is 8.5 feet longer than the next longest narrow-body (the 757-300).

Speedbird, I thought of you this afternoon when I had lunch at Cafe Brasil in West Los Angeles...the $9.95 lunch special was skirt steak with minced onion and tomato, enough rice with black beans to feed 3 people, grilled plantains, pao de queijo and a diet Antarctica guarana soda. Makes me wonder how all the lasses in fio dentals on Ipanema stay so fit eating all that starch LOL.

Hahahahahah. Good for you mabel. Well to be honest all the Brazilian lasses hit 30 then just turn into an A380. But a good piece of ''Picanha'' washed down with a Guarana or pinga is an excellent choice. Have they got ''Churassco rodizios there?. I presume you like Brazilian food Mabel? I'm not to keen on Feijoada. Its the Charque (jerked beef) tatest like cow chewing gum.

Yes, we have a few churrasquerias here. My wife and I went to one with another couple about 2 months ago and it was great fun. The picanha and those little sausages were quite tasty and the capirinhas made everything go down easy. It also gave me a chance to take the piss out of my Vegan secretary and remind her what she's missing haha

There are plenty of American A380 jumbo ladies round here too...even in the entertainment capitol of the world! If you compare humans to aircraft they start out as a 757 (sleek and slender), then transform to a 380 (plump) and finally into a 747 SP parked in the desert (hunched over and decrepit).

Hahahahahahaha thats funny. I sometimes compare them to the Citation X. Hot and sleek. Then after a few years of use get an upgrade

I'd imagine constant upgrades/extensions/modifications are expensive but critical for the air<frame> to remain <operational> for many yrs around Hollywood/Burbanks......
