This more than likely has been mentioned before by myself (because its my local airport) or another aviation enthusiast, but anyway. Southend airport currently have, as you more than likely know, 2 services a week to Jersey in the summer with flybe. They are looking to expand by building a new and more up to date control tower, extension of the runway so that they can handle aircraft of Airbus A319 size and a new terminal, that will be larger, and will hopefully (fingers crossed) 1.9 million passengers a year! It is currently up for sale, and a array of companies (AIG, Maquarie and Abertis included) are looking to buy. Does the airport have potential?

I am convinced that there is a future for many of our smaller local airports and we have talked about Carlisle and Dundee on this forum in the past. It is all down to the support that the local community will give if and when services are started up. FlyBe are the people to do this for Southend and I do think they will get the support required. I have a friend in Southend and he complains when he has to go to one of the London airports for even a domestic flight so come on FlyBe lets see some further flights when the airport improves.

AIG is still a potential investor for any airport in the world? I admit I'm completely amazed if that's true. Given AIG's near-liquidation/collapse status, its rescuer(i.e. U.S. Feds bailout worth over US$120billion) won't be pleased with investment that will further curtail AIG's cashflow...

There is a move by HMG in the UK as they want to show that they are green to reduce the number of domestic flights by putting passengers onto the train. If they do this it will kill off many of the smaller airports.
To get me on a train they would need to invest in new lines and new stock as the trains right now are filthy and dated. They are not comfortable and their safety record is poor. I went from Glasgow to Birmingham on Virgin Trains and I had to stand for the first 2 hrs 40 mins before I could get a seat.
But apart from all that they are expensive and I could walk on with a bomb as I could with any of the sea crossings I make due to the lack of or the non existant presence of security. Why is this ? BUT when I fly it is almost a strip search. I could kill more people on a train or a boat than I could in a plane.
For me I will stick to flying and support the smaller airports.

ENVOY320 if the only people who want to fly to / from Southend are people who stay there is that not a good reason to develope the airport ???? I DO
STAN Stratford is not a great distance from London so I agree with what you are saying but what about people from Inverness, Aberdeen, Belfast even Newcastle they need domestic flight connections.

There is a business consortium which could include the Stobart brothers looking at a number of regional airports with a view to developing them into small commuter style airports. The other thing that is of interest to people such as The Stobart Group is the fact that to fly into and out of large airports with freight and small package courier traffic is very costly so if you own a facility you can control the costs.
Once these airports are up and running, airlines such as FlyBE and others will take note of the cost, area population and locan business interests and as we have seen in the USA they will provide services.
This wont happen overnight but watch this space as they say.
For example: Look what is happening at Dundee in Scotland with the Loganair / FlyBE involvement.
